What is Interference? What is Interference? Interference is an act by the offense that interferes, obstructs, impedes, hinders or confuses any fielder attempting to make a play. There are three basic types of offensive interference. 1) Batter's Interference Scenario: Runner on first is stealing on pitch, batter swings and misses at pitch, then steps across the plate as the catcher is about to throw or is throwing to 2nd base. This is Batter's interference. Batter is out and runner returns to first. If runner is retired, we disregard the interference and the out stands 2) Runner's Interference Scenario: Runner on first is running toward second (in the base path or not does not matter) and makes contact with the second baseman attempting to field the ball. This is offensive interference and the runner is out. Ball is dead, batter awarded first base. No other runners may advance. If they were on base at the start of the pitch, they must return to that base. 3) Batter-Runner Interference[/color] Scenario: Batter either bunts or hits a slow roller that is fielded by the pitcher, catcher or first baseman. Batter-Runner does not run the last half of the distance to first base in the running lane and in doing so causes an errant throw, causes a missed thrown ball, is hit by a thrown ball while in fair territory or is hit by or kicks a live batted ball on his way to first base. This is Offensive Interference and the Batter Runner is out. No other runners can advance.
